SUMMER MAKEUP FAVOURITES

Summer is undoubtedly my favourite time of the year with events on every weekend, festivals, warm nights, beach days, roadtrips, and everyone just wanting to be out and socializing. Despite all these perks, it also comes with its challenges in the makeup department. Foundation not sitting nicely, breakouts from sweat and clogged pores (cute, right?), and the inability to wear a full face of makeup comfortably. Eyeshadow and any black liners tend to become a no-go zone for me completely because it’s really not fun when it’s sliding down your face.

So it’s pretty established that less is more when it comes to summer makeup. Cue the tinted moisturisers, lightweight foundations, cream blushes, and SPF primers. Although I do a lot of my makeup shopping in the drugstore, during Summer is a time I also like to invest in products that are going to provide me with longevity and durability.

Jane Iredale PureBrow Gel

If there’s one thing I never skimp out on, no matter where I’m going, it’s brows. The Jane Iredale PureBrow gel has been my savior during the current heatwave. The last thing I want to do is spend 15 minutes perfecting my brows only for them to fade away a few hours later. This brow gel naturally tints your brows and sets all your eyebrow hairs into place. It adds colour and fullness without having to go in with an eye pencil. Unfortunately, I feel like I just can’t get away with the brow gel by itself so I do apply it over powder to set everything down and add a bit more fullness. But hey, it’s still a step up from my dipbrow, powder, and gel routine. Once I brush this gel through my eyebrows, they will not budge all day.

The brow gel comes in 4 colours: auburn, blonde, brunette (pictured above), and clear.

Dermalogica Skinperfect Primer

There’s not usually ever a day I go without primer, but this is especially important during summer as makeup is more likely to fade or move around quicker. Just testing the Dermalogica Skinperfect Primer for the first time, I knew it was going to become an all-time favourite. Alike any good primer, it smooths away fine lines, but brightens your skin too. It has a natural, skin-tone tint to it which I was quite surprised to see as I’ve only ever used clear primers. It doesn’t provide any colour to your skin once blended in as such, but instead it provides a neutral tint to help balance tone and enhance luminosity.

Another incredible bonus of this primer is that it contains peptides that help firm and shield skin against MMP and free radical damage. In other words, it helps to control the signs of ageing. It also contains SPF30, and when it’s summertime, it’s so important to make sure your primer contains some kind of SPF. The benefits are endless, I could do a whole post entirely dedicated to the benefits of SPF (to name a few: slows down the appearance of wrinkles, prevents facial brown spots and skin discolorations).

Clarins HydraQuench Tinted Moisturiser

Many people are under the impression that you should stay away from hydrating and moisturising products, and to only really take advantage of them during the colder months. Truth is, the sun also severely dehydrates your skin. I actually believe summer is the worst season for your skin – it calls for blocked pores, dehydration and hyperpigmentation, so you want to keep things light when it comes to a base. Sometimes I ditch the foundation all together and stick with a tinted moisturiser. The HydraQuench Tinted Moisturiser with SPF15 is practically made for hot, summer days and is really just ideal on vacations. It feels very lightweight, whilst providing a light coverage that combines moisturising hyaluronic acid (a powerful anti-aging property that is also one of the premier hydrating ingredients for skin, even for oily, sensitive, or breakout-prone skin) and katafray bark extract (encourages the skin’s natural hydration mechanisms).

This product is more about evening your skin tone, giving your skin that “my skin but better” appearance rather than providing coverage. I usually wear it in conjunction with a concealer to cover any spots or under eye darkness.

Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid Highlighter

Now for my favourite pick of the lot, the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid Highlighter. Becca is a brand I’ve only recently, as of the past few months, started to discover. I always knew of the brand, but I had never ventured over to that section of Sephora. And I’m so shattered that I didn’t, because there isn’t a product I haven’t loved, including this liquid highlighter. If you watch my YouTube videos, you’ll know how much I love a good highlighter. You can apply it before your foundation or add a bit to your foundation for a dewy and healthy glow. The highlighter contains iridescent shimmer to reflect the light and imparts a beautiful glow to the skin. You can also apply it as a liquid highlighter for a subtle shimmery glow. As someone who loves a dewy, illuminated finish all year round, I usually end up applying it both ways.

It comes in 6 different shades, the one pictured is Moonstone and it matches my skin perfectly. I really do love the fact Becca has provided a variety of shades for not only different skin tones, but also undertones. You can shop the range here!
