Why Every Woman Should Own a Wrap Dress

It’s been more than 40 years since Diane von Furstenberg first created the wrap dress in 1974, and the fact it’s still on everyone’s radar tells us it’s more than just a trend. When I spotted this Silk Mini Wrap Dress in my favourite colour, I didn’t even think twice about clicking that checkout button. I’m almost a little tempted to purchase it in navy too…? Paired with my new favourite heels, it creates the prettiest spring outfit perfect evening drinks.

Besides the blush hue, it’s the wrap around detail that caught me too. The elastic waist and swing style skirt keep a classic style, but the material gives it a modern update. The iconic wrap dress became a symbol of femininity, women’s freedom, and a wardrobe staple. And it’s back bigger than ever for for SS16. Here’s just 5 reasons why every girl should have at least one wrap dress in their wardrobe!

Flattering for every body type

To this day, I still firmly believe wrap dresses are the one style that is flattering on everyone. Many have argued that it’s a myth and that wrap dresses are quite the opposite of flattering on women, but I have to disagree. With the amount of styles of wrap dresses out there now – midi, maxi, satin, silk, long sleeve, strapless, etc – I truly believe there’s a wrap dress to suit every girl. The right dress hugs you in all the right places; it gives the illusion of a smaller waist and curves to those without. It follows your body, enhancing and concealing at the same time, and that is the reason why it looks amazing on all body types.

It works for every occasion

Day to night, work to cocktails; a wrap dress will carry you through ever kind of occasion. You can dress some down and others up depending on the material, colour and style. Plus they’re an easy option from a styling perspective. I love pairing mine with either a leather jacket or trench, depending on the event. With a longer length, it would become more formal, and in a different material, it would become more casual. Bottom line, a wrap dress is a timeless piece that can be styled in a myriad of ways for any event.

…& every season

I bought my wrap dress specifically for spring, but I can definitely see myself getting use out of it during autumn & possibly even winter (especially in the navy colour worn with heeled boots). If you are going to invest in a dress, a wrap dress is a great place to start as it wont be restricted to only one season.

It’s empowering

A true business woman, Diane von Furstenberg modeled the very first wrap dress she ever made and marketed with the slogan “Feel like a woman, wear a dress.” Her wrap dress was made to give women empowerment and confidence, as the silhouette creates the feminine hour glass figure that we all desire. Five million wrap dresses later, she graced the November 1976 cover of Newsweek, touted as a new icon of female liberation and the most marketable designer since Coco Chanel. The crossover style was inspired by ballerinas’ warm-up gear and turned out to be exactly what women want – to go to work and still feel feminine.

It’s a style, not a trend

In today’s contemporary world of fast fashion, it’s rare that a style or silhouette will stay on trend for very long. But as a style that’s been around for over 40 years, the wrap dress is undoubtedly more than just a trend. It’s a fashion statement. Just like many of your other closet staples (the LBD, LWD, jeans, a crisp white shirt), the wrap dress has become timeless and a staple in every woman’s wardrobe. Sure, over the decades it’s dress has been updated and modernized, but it’s still kept its distinctive flair. It’s easy to get into, and easier to get out of. The need to for fashion yet comfort and function means the wrap dress is here to stay and more popular than ever.
