A Morning Routine for Energy and Productivity

morning routine for energy

Mornings have never really been my thing.

I sort of just stumble and crawl out of bed, then pretty much sleepwalk to the coffee machine.

Over the past few months I’ve started to notice how important morning routines are for success, energy & productivity. They help set the tone of the day. Even though we don’t always realize it, as the day goes on, we have increased difficulty exerting self-control and focusing on our work.

So I decided it was time to make a change and implement a morning routine that has actually proved quite effective. That’s not to say I now love mornings, but I’m learning to really appreciate them.

Whether you naturally wake up feeling alert or stumble and crawl out of bed like myself, this routine will help set a positive tone that lasts the entire day.

1. Lemon + water

If there is one thing I never start the day without, it’s lemon water. I didn’t know nor believe the benefits of this drink until I started consistently drinking it every morning. It helps provide energy, improve your mood, digestion, pH levels, boosts your immune system, cleanses your system & reduces hunger cravings throughout the day.

So yeah, lemons are basically PACKED with nutrients, including vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and fiber.

It’s really just amazing & there’s no reason not to be taking advantage of this every morning. The best part is even when you’re traveling, it’s easy to find lemon water. Just try to make sure to use fresh organic lemons!

2. Apple Cider Vinegar Detox Drink

If I’m in need of some extra detoxing (eg after a long weekend or bad food day) I’ll opt for this ACV detox drink instead of lemon water. Apple cider vinegar is incredible for detoxing, digestion, weight loss, energy production, etc.

3. A quick workout

I understand working out in the morning does not fit everyone’s schedules, but even if it’s possible to even get your heart rate up for 10 minutes, it still makes a difference. Do something to improve circulation, lymph drainage, and get your metabolism going. Usually I prefer to get out and go for a power walk / run, but when I’m short for time, I love this quick workout which you can repeat it as many times as you want!

15 squats
15 push ups
30 second plank
15 bicycle crunches

Aim to repeat 2-3 times

4. Dry brushing

Dry brushing is kind of amazing in every single way. I feel like I could do a whole post on how much I love it but to put it simply, dry brushing gives you a MAJOR energy boost. It helps to unclog pores and excrete toxins, it stimulates your lymph system (especially great if you’re not really an active person), reduces stress and cellulite (!!!).

Here’s a quick little how-to:

1. Purchase a natural (not synthetic) bristle brush with a long handle.

2. Start on dry skin before bathing & work in gentle circular, upward motions, then longer, smoother strokes.

3. Always begin at the ankles in upwards movements towards the heart unless it’s your back, then begin from the neck down.

4. Be cautious of softer and sensitive skin and never brush over inflamed skin, sores, sun-burnt skin, or skin cancer.

4. Once you’ve brushed your entire body, jump in the shower to ensure you wash away the dead skin cells and impurities

Tip: alternate between the hottest water temperature you can tolerate to the coldest. This stimulates blood circulation, bringing more blood to the top layers of the skin (SUPER energizing too)

5. Rinse off, moisturize (coconut oil works great) & relax!

5. A nutritional breakfast

Your breakfast is key to balancing out your energy levels for the day. Avoid white carbs, cereals, store-bought muesli, instant oats and anything with sugar. Foods such as steel cut oats, smoothie bowls, granola and greek yogurt, eggs with avocado and chia pudding with coconut milk are the most nutritious options. At the moment I’m rotating between steel cut oats (these are the BEST ever) and acai bowls with extra superfoods including chia seeds, goji berries, bee pollen, & coconut oil for added benefits. They really go a long way.

6. A refreshing skincare routine

I keep my morning skincare routine simple but effective. I’m not about using 92649 products because I find my skin just reacts badly. I prefer to invest in good quality skincare products and keep it natural where possible.

My AM skincare regime goes a little something like this:

+ Cleanse with raw coconut oil (yes, it’s a thing) otherwise I’ll use a gentle cleansing milk
+ Use a toning spray for a quick spritz
+ Add a few drops of rosehip oil in my moisturiser

& that’s it! Super simple, right?

When I stick to a simple but nourishing routine like this, I always notice my skin feels smoother and looks brighter. I haven’t had one blemish since switching to this routine.

7. Write your to-do list

To-do lists are everything. If I don’t set my to-do list in the morning, it’s almost as if my whole day falls apart. Each morning write down 3-5 of the most important things to tick off by the end of the day. Organizing your tasks with a list can make everything so much more manageable and keep your priorities in order.

8. Keep hydrated with infused water

When I drink at least 2-3 litres of water a day, I notice a huge difference to my energy levels. During the morning, I keep a 1 litre water bottle on my desk that I try to finish before lunch. Infusing your water is a simple & delicious way to make drinking water a little more interesting! I switch up my combinations throughout the day but my favourites include lemon + lime + orange and strawberry + watermelon + mint.

Plus, there’s so many more health benefits to infusing your water!
