My diet the past few weeks has been quite appalling to say the least, and I feel like my body has just caught up with it all. I’ve never felt so tired, moody and unmotivated.
The WORST, right?
A few days ago I woke up feeling horribly ill after another sleepless night & decided it’s time for a serious detox. Usually I start the day with warm lemon water, which is loaded with benefits, but these holidays called for something more and that’s when I turned to apple cider vinegar.
I’m completely and utterly obsessed with apple cider vinegar.
Haven’t heard about of it? Let me give you the low down.
Recent studies boast about apple cider vinegar for about its weight loss abilities, generating energy, suppressing hunger, and preventing fat accumulation via its impact on insulin production. Scientists also theorize that apple cider vinegar interferes with the body’s digestion of starch, which means fewer calories enter the bloodstream. Because of it’s post-toxin rinse, it can also soothe a sore throat due to its bacteria killing agents and prevent the common cold.
Please note you should NOT drink apple cider vinegar straight (even just a few tbsps). Always dilute it with water and add lemon to alkalize it in your system, otherwise the acid might be too much and cause stomach pains. It also loses its benefit when you try to mix it with something like juice – so do your research and be careful.
I’ve started drinking this detox drink first thing in the morning and sometimes last thing at night.
When combined with other natural ingredients such as lemon, cinnamon and honey, vinegar not only becomes a tasty dose of medicine, but a soothing ‘tea’ with even more benefits. I previously discussed the benefits of lemon, cinnamon lowers blood sugar levels, and cayenne and mint work together to become a fantastic digestive aid. I also add in rice malt syrup some mornings for sweetness, but it’s optional.
Heated in a mug or iced out of the fridge, combined with soda water or mixed into a morning juice, you can enjoy this apple cider detox drink any way you like.
• 1 cup of water
• 2 Tbsp. Apple Cider Vinegar (all-natural, unfiltered & not pasteurized)
• 2 Tbsp. lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
• 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
• 1 pinch cayenne powder
• optional 1 Tbsp. sweetener (eg raw honey, truvia, rice malt syrup)
• A few mint leaves
Makes: 1 serving
Dissolve cinnamon, cayenne, sweetener, and lemon in hot water (stir well). Add apple cider vinegar to mixture. Consume right away for a hot tea, or cool and store in airtight jar for an iced detox beverage ready at any time. The beverage will be rather concentrated, so drink small cups or mix in water if it is too strong for your liking. Will last for up to a week in the refrigerator.
It is best taken in the morning on an empty stomach and at night after dinner.
